The Singapore Selection squad for The Sultan of Selangor's Cup (TSSC) was revealed in a press conference at the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) this afternoon. Cup Co-Chairman and FAS vice president Teo Hock Seng addressed the media and also took the opportunity to announce his Singapore Selection coaching panel which consists of Head Coach Fandi Ahmad, Assistant Coach Nazri Nasir and Team Manager Noh Alam Shah.

With a good mix of experienced campaigners, foreign players and prodigious talents in his squad, Fandi expressed that it would be an exciting match to watch. "I hope the fans will come and show their support for the players and the Singapore Selection, especially since we have heard that Selangor will be bringing in thousands of fans to support their side. We cannot let the National Stadium become their home ground!”

2017 will see the 16th edition of the TSSC hosted by Singapore for the first time since 2009 and at the Singapore Sports Hub for the very first time. Apart from the traditional curtain-raiser match between the Singapore Veterans and Selangor Veterans, a ‘Singapore-Selangor Schools Challenge Cup’ match will also be held for the very first time this year in a match which sees the Singapore Sports School’s Under-16 side playing against the Selangor Combined Schools team in the opening match of the day.

Teo revealed that there were already 24,788 tickets sold (at the time of the press conference) and he was hoping that the numbers would exceed 30,000 on the matchday itself. He said that at the prices at which the tickets were being offered ($$3 for concession tickets and $8 for adults), the committee was not looking to make money but were instead going for volume and they encouraged everybody to come and support the team.

"We're paying a bit more to have (Sports Singapore) open up the stadium so everybody can have access (to where they want to sit)." said Teo.

While his initial squad of 25 had been whittled down to 21 players, Fandi mentioned that there might be still some changes depending the post-match availability of the Under-22 players, who are involved in the international friendly against Vanuatu Under-20s on Thursday.

Lions skipper Shahril Ishak was delighted to be playing in the Cup after an eight year absence from the S.League. "I hope to see the fans coming to support us and I hope that we will have a good game against Selangor." said the 33 year old.

In regard to Noh Alam Shah's appointment as the Team Manager, Teo said "Both Fandi and Noh Alam Shah are attacking players, top scorers who previously scored many goals for Singapore. I hope this attacking mindset (by the coaching team) would translate into as many goals as possible for the team to make things interesting for this Sultan of Selangor's Cup."

"All these players, they didn't say no when we approached them for the match and they are all raring to play. This reignited the fire within me and I hope that they will show the same kind of fire which I showed (in the past)." said Noh in a light-hearted manner, drawing huge laughter and applause from the crowd.

"Just don't burn the stadium down." quipped Teo in reply.
