Updated on 18 May 2017 with fixtures: The RHB Singapore Cup 2017 Preliminary Round Draw was held at Ocean Financial Centre today and the draw saw the names of Geylang International, Hougang United, Warriors FC and Balestier Khalsa being thrown into the pot against foreign invitational teams in the form of Ceres Negros FC (Philippines), Global Cebu FC (Philippines), Boeung Ket Angkor FC (Cambodia) and Nagaworld FC (Cambodia).

Geylang, Hougang, Warriors and Balestier will need to play in the preliminary round as they finished in the bottom half of the league last season (5th, 6th, 7th and 8th place respectively) while last season's wooden-spoonists Garena Young Lions will be sitting out of this season's edition due to the SEA Games.

The winners of the four matches will go on to face Albirex Niigata (S) FC, Tampines Rovers FC, Brunei DPMM FC and Home United FC, who go through to the next round by virtue of finishing in the top half last season.

Hougang United and Geylang International will be going up against the winners of their respective groups in the AFC Cup and it should be an interesting battle in both matches. Geylang International, who narrowly missed out on an AFC Cup spot because of an inferior goal difference to Home United, will particularly be relishing their chance to shine against foreign opposition.

The draw also saw reigning Albirex Niigata (S) FC captain Shuto Inaba returning the cup in a symbolic display. CEO and Country Head of RHB Singapore Mr Mike Chan and FAS council member Mr Michael Foo were present to conduct the draw and RHB took the opportunity to announce that it would be extending the sponsorship for the Singapore Cup for further three years to 2019.

FAS Council Member Mr Michael Foo said: “We are grateful to have RHB Singapore’s unwavering support for the Singapore Cup for the past 12 years. This sponsorship renewal for the next three years is a strong show of support and commitment from RHB Singapore to help us continue developing local football, and bringing our partnership to 15 years is testament to the mutually beneficial relationship we have. We hope that more corporations will follow the lead of RHB Singapore and step forward to partner with us to raise the standards of Singapore football.”

Added Mr Mike Chan, CEO and Country Head of RHB Singapore: “RHB is pleased to extend the title sponsorship of the RHB Singapore Cup. This fifth renewal marks yet another exciting chapter of the RHB – FAS/S.League partnership, anchoring our commitment and support to the development of Singapore football. Football fans will be treated to more exciting matches with selected foreign teams participating in this year’s regional premier cup tournament that will soon take place, leading up to the Finals towards the end of the year.”
