Yishun Sentek Mariners could not have had a better start to the National Football League (NFL) Division One season as they thrashed Siglap FC in a thumping 6-1 scoreline at the Yishun Stadium.

Amirul Walid opened the accounts for Yishun before Zul Feshal claimed a first-half brace and second half goals from Zulkiffli Hassim, skipper Shamsurin Rahman and Rahim Mahmood were more than enough to present them with the maximum three points, while Ahmad Sarif pulled one goal back for Siglap.

Despite Yishun being the favourites for the game, their opponents walked out of the tunnel with determination to produce an upset on the opening match-day, boasting the likes of former S-League players Guntur Djafril, Aliff Shafaein and captain Sahairi Ramri in the line-up.
Both teams started the game with difficulty in pulling passes together and keeping the ball, but Yishun turned out to be the first to settle down in the game.

The hosts’ first real chance of the game itself was successful as they broke the deadlock in the 16th minute thanks to Amirul, who cleverly picked out a perfectly weighted through-pass from Ridho Jafri and duly slotted the ball pass a hapless Munaf Zubair.

That goal seemed to have set the momentum and turned out to be the first of many, as they started to move the ball around with confidence and hunger.

Yishun doubled their lead just five minutes later, when Zul managed to beat a defender from the left before unleashing a thunderous shot which rattled the back of the net.

The winger then bagged his well-deserved brace minutes later, as his penalty-kick found its way into the top corner of the net after Amirul was brought down in the box.

Not having registered a single shot on target, Siglap could not have had a poorer half, and were hoping to change things around in the second half with evident tactical amendments. However, Yishun had other plans when they added a fourth, this time through Zulkiffli, who converted from the spot.

It may have been practically game over for Siglap by then, but they did not throw in the towel and bagged a consolation goal through Ahmad. The forward was alert enough to snatch a loose ball which Yishun failed to clear, and pulled the trigger from eight yards out.

It was 5-1 minutes later, when Yishun caught the opposing defence flat-footed. The men in blue made full use of the time and space given as former Woodlands Wellington midfielder Shamsurin was at the end of Zulkiffli’s low cross, and tapped the ball home from close range.

Despite being four goals down, Siglap’s objective was to reduce the deficit as much as possible and they started surging forward and caused the Yishun defence some trouble. Luck though, was not in their side as shots from Aliff and Hairul Erwann flew past the wrong side of the post.

It was an icing on the cake for Yishun as they capped off a memorable win with a sixth goal after the referee pointed to the spot, deeming Faizwan Roslan’s shove on Zulkifli Suzliman from the back to be a foul. Rahim sent substitute custodian Halim Abdullah the wrong way as Yishun relished to a sweet victory..
